Routine Eye Exam Q&A

What is a routine eye exam?

A routine eye exam is a comprehensive evaluation of your vision and eye health. Center for Advanced Eye Care often begins by discussing your medical history and any problems you’re experiencing.

Eye exams include a variety of tests and procedures to check your vision and overall health. Tests to assess your visual acuity evaluate how clearly you see close up and at a distance. Other tests, such as eye dilation, are used to look inside your eye and check for eye diseases.

The team may have you look through different lenses and shine bright lights into your eyes during your exam. If you wear glasses or contacts, you should bring them to your eye appointment.

Why are routine eye exams important?

Getting routine eye examinations ensures you’re enjoying your best possible vision. Corrective lenses, like eyeglasses or contact lenses, are customized to give you sharp, clear vision.

In addition to giving you better vision with corrective lenses, eye exams give the Center for Advanced Eye Care team the opportunity to evaluate your eye health. The optic nerve at the back of your eye connects directly to your brain and gives the doctor a look at the health of your nerves, blood vessels, and brain.

During your eye exam, Center for Advanced Eye Care checks for eye conditions that may not have early symptoms. Common diseases, like diabetic eye disease and glaucoma, are serious conditions that can cause vision loss if left untreated. They often don’t have warning signs, but catching them early increases the success of treatment.

How often should you get an eye exam?

How often you need your eyes checked depends on your age, existing eye conditions, and risk for developing other eye diseases.

In general, young children will have their first comprehensive eye exam between the ages of 3 and 5 or before they start going to school. School-aged children should have their eyes examined every 1-2 years.

People in their 20s and 30s may only need an eye exam once every five years. Between the ages of 40 and 64, it’s a good idea to have your eyes checked every 2-3 three years. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you likely need an eye exam once a year, regardless of your age.

As you age, your risk for vision loss increases. If you have a family history of eye disease or you have diabetes, you should get eye exams yearly. Everyone over the age of 65 should have annual eye exams, too.

Center for Advanced Eye Care is dedicated to giving patients their best possible vision. Whether or not you wear glasses, if you have an existing eye condition, or you want to stay on top of your eye health, make an appointment for an exam today by calling the office or booking online.
