Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox® is a brand-name cosmetic injectable that smooths the creases on your skin. Botox and similar products like Dysport® and Xeomin® all use the same neuromodulator called botulinum toxin to stop nerve impulses from making the muscles under your skin flex. As a result, the wrinkles overlaying them disappear temporarily while the muscles relax.

Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are injectable, and the team at Center for Advanced Eye Care uses them meticulously. They always use small doses to build up to the desired result and avoid freezing muscles that you still need to use to make facial expressions.

What does Botox treat?

Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that appear over time with muscle contractions as a direct cause. These are the wrinkles that Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin can treat. Some notable examples are:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead lines

Botox can also temporarily stop irritating symptoms like eyelid spasms. In other clinical contexts, it can treat neuromuscular issues like migraines, excessive sweating, and cervical dystonia.

How long does Botox last?

Botox and similar products all stay active for 4-6 months before you see the treated wrinkles reappear. This doesn’t mark the end of your time with wrinkle-free skin, though. You can ask the team at Center for Advanced Eye Care about making regular appointments for follow-up injections if you were happy with your results the first time.

What are fillers?

Fillers, or dermal fillers, aren’t quite the same as neuromodulators like Botox. They’re injectables that have a cosmetic effect, but they don’t work by affecting your nerves and muscles. Instead, they mimic subdermal fat and boost volume in targeted areas under your skin.

You can use dermal fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane® to soften larger wrinkles that won’t see a difference with Botox injections. Or fillers can:

  • Give you more voluminous lips
  • Make your cheeks more plump
  • Decrease the shadows under your lower eyelids
  • Improve the symmetry of your face
  • Refine or slightly alter your facial contours

Both Juvéderm and Restylane are primarily made of dissolvable hyaluronic acid and can stay in place for 6-12 months. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component throughout your body that holds volume by helping your skin retain water.

If you don’t like the way certain wrinkles or facial contours look, you can fix them nonsurgically using injectables like Botox and fillers. Book your treatment consultation today by calling Center for Advanced Eye Care or requesting an appointment online.
