What is LASIK?

LASIK involves using highly effective, advanced laser technology to correct the deterioration and alterations in the shape of the corneas, the transparent layer that forms the front of the eye.

LASIK can resolve an array of eye conditions and problems, including:

Nearsightedness

With nearsightedness, you can only see things that are close to you, while objects in the distance appear blurry.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a prevalent eye condition involving a deviation in the spherical curvature of your eye. This deviation causes distorted and blurry images.

LASIK eye surgery corrects the deformation in your cornea to ensure that light can be properly refracted to your retina. The LASIK procedure reshapes your cornea to correct your vision.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is associated with aging and involves farsightedness, which is the result of a loss of elasticity in the lens of the eye.

Farsightedness

If you’re farsighted, you have the ability to see objects far away better than close-ups.

What can I expect during my LASIK consultation?

You’ll need to stop wearing your contact lenses for two weeks before your LASIK consultation. The team needs to evaluate your cornea's natural shape, and contacts can temporarily change that shape.

The Center for Advanced Eye Care providers review your medical history and discuss your goals and expectations with the LASIK procedure. They perform a comprehensive eye exam to evaluate your eye health and determine if you’re a suitable candidate and if your eyes are healthy enough for the surgery.

Your specialist confirms your prescription, measures the thickness and curvature of your corneas, and tests your eye pressure and pupil dilation.

Am I a suitable candidate for LASIK eye surgery?

To be a suitable candidate, you should have realistic goals about what can be achieved with LASIK surgery. Continuing natural alterations in your eye could mean that you might still require corrective eyewear and reading glasses in the future, even after your LASIK procedure.

For many people, however, LASIK can be a permanent solution.

LASIK often isn’t a suitable option for:

Adolescents or children

People with lupus, herpes, HIV, rheumatoid arthritis, and other conditions or infections that can affect the eyes

People with glaucoma, thin corneas, cataracts, dry eyes, or large pupils

To be a suitable candidate, your prescription must have stayed the same for the previous year and you must have good eye health. Only certain prescriptions can be effectively corrected with LASIK.

If you’re interested in a LASIK procedure, call the Center for Advanced Eye Care or request an appointment online today.
