What is eyelid surgery?

The skin and other tissues of your eyelids change over time, just like the tissues in the rest of your face and body. Many people find that their eyelids begin to droop or sag as they age.

This can be an aesthetic issue, altering the shape of your eyes and making you look tired and older than your age. For others, drooping eyelids or changes in the shape of eyelids can cause problems with their vision or eye health. These changes can even alter the way your eyes close, which can lead to dry eye and an increased risk of infection.

Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure that removes extra skin and repositions eyelids. The procedure is unique to you -- structured to address your specific needs and treatment goals. You can have eyelid surgery on either your upper or lower eyelids or both.

Am I a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

You may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery or an eyelift if any of the following are true:

  • Your eyelids droop to make you look sleepy
  • Your eyes always look half-closed
  • Drooping lids interfere with vision
  • You have bags under your eyes
  • You look older than you feel because of your eyes

Eyelid surgery can greatly enhance your appearance, making you look years younger. It can also make you feel more confident, more comfortable, and overall happier with your looks.

During your consultation at the Center for Advanced Eye Care, your surgeon assesses your eyelids and explains your treatment options. You go into your procedure with a full understanding of what to expect regarding the process and results.

How does eyelid surgery work?

Your surgeon creates an incision to access the underlying tissues. They might place incisions in the natural fold of your upper or lower eyelids or even in the inside portion of the eyelid.

Next, the surgeon removes or redistributes excess skin or fat in your eyelids to create a tighter, more streamlined shape and size. They take care to ensure your eyelids still close properly over the surface of your eyes, which is important to protect your eyes and distribute tears for lubrication.

Once your surgeon achieves the proper contouring, they close the incisions using sutures or a special medical adhesive.

How long is recovery after eyelid surgery?

The healing process from blepharoplasty takes time, and it may be several months before you see the full effects of your procedure. During your follow-up visits, your care team checks your healing progress and makes sure there are no signs of infection.

You can expect to have bruising and swelling for around two weeks after your eyelid surgery. You'll need to keep your head elevated and use cold compresses for the first few days.

Because your surgeon at the Center for Advanced Eye Care carefully places your incisions in your natural eyelid creases, your scarring is minimal and won't be noticeable after a few months.
